In 4 weeks and one day I’ll be on the plane to Bangkok.
In 5 weeks I’ll be starting my DiveMaster training.
I expect to eat things like this.
And see views like this.
So, on August 19 I returned to Seattle. I got to drive through Seattle’s summer rush hour traffic to get to my mom’s house and then promptly went to my godfamily’s house. Kimberly & Erik are the ones who decided, a few years ago, to ask me to be one of the two godmothers to their kids. I know, what are they getting themselves into? Regardless, they’re part of the whole “reasons I moved home” list. And their two kids. Those are some good reasons, I promise.
Now that it’s over a month after I moved home, I have had some time to think on the merits of moving home, without a job. It was good to have some time off, but does anyone really need two months off? Wait, don’t answer that. I will be taking another few months off shortly. But that will be in another country, and I will be scuba diving. Or learning to lead you scuba diving. Anyway, it has been a while now, and I’m still trying to find some work that will allow me to travel, but could also still bring in money (so if you have any leads, I’ll take them – I’m not talking ponzi schemes, or random emails from Nigerian princes here!). I’m also relying on what I learned a few years ago when I was just back from Thailand and not working. As hard as that time was, it was VERY valuable. I was forced to accept help (yes, I don’t do it easily – so I say forced!) and it taught me a lesson about my friends. So, all in all it was really rough, and really good. I know it was hard, but I dug deep and learned things. Crazy, I know.
I have gotten to see parts of my family, spend time with friends and also spend time with my mom. I need to bike more, but that’ll happen. I’ll get over the idea of getting damp while cycling. Really, I will.
Since I’ve been back in Seattle, I’ve gone to LA for the Best Buddies Hearst Castle Challenge (flew to LAX, drove to Carmel, ate amazing food, rode 63 of the toughest miles in my life – photo along the route above, drove back to LA, flew home), went to Louisville for a meeting (flew to Louisville, went on two bourbon tours, had a few days of meetings, had amazing food with awesome friends, flew home) and then drove to Leavenworth to spend time with my dad & stepmom. Then I got to take the train back to Seattle (picture below).
So, I’ve been busy, albeit a slacker. I’ve been church-shopping (that’s a whole different blog post!) and getting to know some (more) of my local bars in Seattle.
And now I am going about the business of moving storage items to Spokane to a dear friend’s garage-loft. I’m again grateful for the kindness of friends. I will drive to Spokane tomorrow and see Anna and her family, and then drive to Kennewick to spend time with my grandmother. The pre-3-month-trip preparation starts now.
This involves the mental preparation too. And, the preparation of leaving my godfamily for a few months. That is hard.
Oh, that’s right, I quit my job and moved home to Seattle.
In the past 6 weeks, I’ve done some crazy things. As in, I quit my job on August 12, drove to SF, then to Arcata, then to Portland, and finally I arrived in Seattle on August 19.
I said goodbye to my awesome social media friends and also non-work friends at Drago Centro, then goodbye to my work family near to work, then goodbye to my South Bay BFF’s at The Tasting Kitchen in Venice. Let me tell you, driving 8 hours while hungover isn’t the easiest thing to do. I was very glad to have had The Tasting Kitchen be my last big meal in LA – and man, did Devon and Justin get me sloshed. I would post some pictures of drinks, but I was too focused on my friends. It’s a loss for everyone, promise.
I got to see some friends in San Francisco, my little brother and some other family outside Arcata and then some other friends in Portland in my week of travel up the coast. It was a great way to think on my drive up. I don’t think that I actually felt the completeness of the move due to the fact that I was scheduled to return to LA for a big bike ride only 4 weeks later. I guess the move in stages part was good.
All in all, my trip from being a Californian to being a Washingtonian was completely awesome. I got to meet several twitter friends that I’d never met before (@themayorpete, @thedapperdiner and @fox_zilla) in San Francisco – all on the same night, in fact. I wandered around the Ferry Building with two friends, and just was mostly mobile, on foot – which is easy to do in SF, whereas not too easy in LA. The sun came out just for me, supposedly. I enjoyed spending a few days with my youngest brother, my virtual sister-in-law and also my niece. I was bummed that the 2nd youngest brother wasn’t around. I spent some good time at the river, reminiscing about when I used to spend time at the river, when I was much younger. The main difference were the rocks. We didn’t have a ton of rocks in Curlew.
After being in the country, I was ready to get back to The City, so I drove for 8 hours to Portland. There I got to see friends who are bartenders, professors and filmmakers. If Seattle doesn’t work out, I can always move to Portland! In Portland I got to meet even more people I’d never met, except for online, along with seeing friends from 7th grade and also 1997. You know, like yesterday. It was lovely to spend time in Portland and I got to meet an amazingly inspiring cyclist, Heidi Swift. Heidi and I have talked on twitter for a while, and I finally got to meet her and go for a ride with her. I knew she’d kick my ass on the ride, so it was all I could do to NOT fall down on the ride. Being hungover definitely did NOT help. Regardless, I survived a trip up Mount Tabor and around Portland. If you want to go biking in Portland – get out there and do it! The bike paths are lovely and the network of paths seems very complete. The only problem was getting back up the hill to where my car was. Huge thanks to Heidi for my cup of coffee and not leaving me in your dust!
Finally it was off to cross the bridge into Washington. It felt good. It felt right. I knew that coming home was going to be a huge deal, but I didn’t know how good it would feel. I had this giddy grin on my face from when I crossed the Columbia River till I saw the Space Needle while stuck in traffic South of Downtown Seattle. When it is right, you know. Just like it was right to leave Seattle 11 years ago, it was right to return on August 19.
(This is just part 1 of my move story. More to come soon.)
I posted a very long post last week, and it was lost on the interwebs. I don’t know where it went! But it detailed the fabulous weekend I had before I went to Hotlanta, so I’ll recreate parts of it. Not all of it, but parts.
I saw Drag Me To Hell, partially due to my boss’ recommendation, and partially due to a blogger I read, CarolineOnCrack, having seen it and enjoying it. So, I chose to see it at the ArcLight in Hollywood, mostly because I feel that the quality of viewers is better than at some other theatres. This time, though, it was not the case. A woman who sat on the other side of me and my friend was walking through the people and didn’t care. And when she sat down she was talking, so my friend and I looked at her. Her response was “REALLY? Really? Really?!?” Oh, people, c’mon! Get a clue and don’t be RUDE! But, the move was quality horror – and I can’t completely even call it horror, I don’t think! The music buildup to each jumpy moment was great. And made it a little less of a horror movie. But, apparently, if you’ve seen Evil Dead, you’re all set for this new Sam Raimi. Now I have to see it! I thoroughly the movie, and have recommended it to a few people – most of whom say that there is no way in hell they’re going to see it. But, I tried!
The following Saturday I had to drop my car off at the mechanic, where he let me pay 1/3 of the ultimate cost and now I’ll have to pay the rest tomorrow. Boo. But, it’s better than on that day! So, if you have a Honda or an Acura, please go see Stacey at Affordable Care of Hollywood. Good stuff. My friend Jessica walked to Intelligentsia from Los Feliz (even though no one walks in LA), which is apparently close to 3 miles RT. But, it was a great morning walk to take, and I even ran into an old friend from high school. I do wish there were an Intelligentsia closer to me in the South Bay. Oh well. Venice will have to do for now. The South Bay isn’t hipster-enough!
I had dinner at a friend’s house, where she set a pig to cookin’ at 6am – yay BBQ!!! And then two friends and I went over for dinner. Good times – apparently it was dry rub BBQ. It’s all good to me! On Sunday it was a typical church day, but it ended with gardening (pictures coming soon, promise!) and an amazing sustainable supper club dinner hosted by ChicksWithKnives. It was absolutely amazing, and I highly recommend you find a dinner and attend one. They’re all over SoCal, and soon will have one in San Diego. GO! They even had a vegan one recently. Just do it, and go!
I had to go to Hotlanta for church, the national craziness, and I started that trip after my first harvesting of Swiss Chard. It was great, with pasta and sausage and mucho garlic! It’s strange to me that now I can sleep very easily on planes. I was asleep within 10 minutes, maybe even 5, of pushback from the gate at LAX. And I woke up when we were taxiing to the gate at ATL. Good skill to have. I got to see my friends in the Presbyterian Health, Education & Wellness Association, along with my step-mom, and it was great. Doing the work of justice is always a balm to anything I’ve got going on!
But, as with any conference, there had to be SOME time to getting away from the convention – there were 1500 Presbyterians doing stuff at this one hotel! So, I called an old friend of mine who now lives in Atlanta and he and his girlfriend came to get me and whisk me away. I had asked several beverage mavens and the twitterverse about fun drink places in Hotlanta, and one of them, Natalie (aka the Liquid Muse) has a friend who saw my plea for beverage houses in ATL and took pity on me. He asked some friends and came up with the following list: (BTW, how flippin’ COOL IS THAT?!?!?)
Drinkshop (W Downtown)
Room at 12 (Centennial Park) or Lobby at 12
Beleza
Trois (on Peachtree)
AJA (inside the Alliance Ctr)
Market (inside the W Buckhead)
Craft
Whiskey Blue (on top of the W)
Nicolai’s Roof (on top of the Hilton)
Leon’s Full Service (Decatur)
BLT Steak
Ritz Carlton bar – Buckhead
Leopard Lounge
Mood Lounge
Serpas
Some of these will depend on the bartender working that night (like mine), but all are top of the top.
There is one “dive/neighborhood bar I wanted to add as well that is a staple of Atlanta, which is Manuel’s Tavern. Nothing spectacular other thatn it is a great old long standing neighborhood hangout. The atmosphere is grand. Tell her to have a great trip.
I tried out Trois, and wow, YUMMY drinks! The bar is downstairs, and we got drenched on the way into the restaurant (one of those apparently typical Southern downpours, that happen briefly with thunder and awesome lightning, and then they go away – and leave the mugginess there). Now I have a list of places to visit when I go back.
I convinced my friend Richard to get a gin drink, after he protested thusly: “I hate G&T’s.” I apparently was able to sway him with the fact that all the awesome drinks that are out there now, with gin, are pretty well just awesome. If you mix gin with fresh fruit (mostly citrus), how can you go wrong? So, that was a coup. It was great to get away from the conference and to just kick back. On Saturday night my friend Leah and I both went out with Richard, as there is only so much of a conference, perhaps, that one can take. We went to a really cool part of Atlanta, called the Highlands, and had tapas and mojitos. Oh yes, good times. And Saturday I was elected to the Board of Directors for PHEWA – so now I am apparently important. To someone. Is it important to you?
When I came home, my friend who was going to water my plants FORGOT. So, my tomato plant looked so, so, so, so very sad. After drenching the pot with water on Sunday and Monday, I am happy to report that she looks beautiful again. So, HAPPY DAY! I think my friend might have been taken out back and hung out to dry if they’d died after all the work I’ve put in. I have had to prop up one of the branches of the tomato plant, due to the fact that it has 6, I think, rather large green tomatoes on it. So, it’s not standing up very well. I tied it, but it needed a prop. My beans have turned out not to need the trellis my dad and I built, so I took some of the bamboo from that, and propped up the end of the tomato branch. Here’s to hopin’ it works! I will post pictures, PROMISE!
Everything that’s coming up and either bearing fruit, or flowers is:
Peas, beans, cosmos, four o’clocks, marigolds, bachelor buttons and morning glories.
The ones that have been flowering since the beginning are flourishing, as they came out of ponies, but they are pansies, petunias (they’re LOVING the sun!!), alyssum. It’s great. I love my garden!!
I went to Beacon in Culver City for their 5th anniversary menu – a bunch of things for 5 bucks – with some friends on Tuesday and it was well worth the $40! Two glasses of wine and 4 small plates – oh yes. Good times. I may just have to go back there for “real” plates sometime. It made me hungry for a Father’s Office burger, though, due to the fact that Beacon is across the street from the Culver City Father’s Office location. Dang. I’ll have to go back there and get a cider and a burger soon! After I go to the gym every day for a week!
I have cheered a friend on, with her workout / get healthy regimen, and now I need to stay on it! Anyone interested in working out “with” me? Even if you’re far away, we can keep in sync with one another. Let me know if you’re interested!
This weekend is shaping up to be more inexpensive – except for a bridal shower on Saturday and the Hungry Cat‘s Crabfest on Sunday. I am very much excited for crab fest!!!
Just because I can, I give a shout-out to my friend Becci’s daughter, and my fake niece, Molly. She graduates today! Congrats, lil one!
I’m not sure I want to be back. Wait, I don’t want to be back.
Clarification: I like my life here, but I’m not sure HOW MUCH I like it here. I don’t hate my job (which I know is unusual), and I have a pretty good life. I just think that if I want to do a diving lifestyle, I should do it sooner than later. I mean, there are several quotes that go well here… “no time like the present.” “You’re not getting any younger.” “Just do it.”
It will take some time, but I will evaluate. My friend Fi gave me some great advice in the following:
Listen to your gut, it’ll tell you what you need to do. If the comforts of home outweigh the travel itch, you’ll have your answer. If the comforts of home don’t outweigh the itch, plan and then follow it.
So, now you know as much as I know…
So, I got off one boat, the M/V Andaman, yesterday and go back on one today. It’s currently Sunday afternoon, at almost 5pm. I don’t have to be at the dive shop till 8pm, so I thought I’d update y’all, so you didn’t think I drowned.
I did NOT drown.
I loved every dive, saw some fantastic things, and you ALL will be subjected to the video. Yes, believe it. I bought a video and will subject anyone I can to it. It’s lovely. And I look like a true scuba idiot. Yes, it’s fab. I met some fantastic peeps from around the globe, and in true small world fashion, I met someone who went to school with someone I know. Who is in fact married to someone I call my big sister. Yes, I went to a tiny town in Thailand and got onto a boat with someone from Manhattan Beach… check out my networking!
Well, this was inadvertent. But, fabulous nonetheless.
Anyway, the life underwater in the Andaman Sea is still wonderful, and makes me want to become a divemaster even more!
The trip was lovely, the water was lovely and I’ve mastered buoyancy even more. Not to the full extent that I want, but it’s been good… I’ve used my own kit, except for a wetsuit, and I love it all. STILL!!! I started the trip with 39 dives under my belt, and I’m now at 52. So, after this coming liveaboard, I’ll be one dive over 60!! YAY! I am seriously addicted, and now need to get my own cold water wetsuit. I’m not sure I’m ready for dry suit diving yet, but… I think it may be more to do with the fact that it’s even MORE expensive. Anyway, it’s great, I love it.
My back is unhappy – I had thought about going tanning to prepare my back for the sun, but a) didn’t have time and b) didn’t think I would need to. Well, I did. Yeah, suckass. The bumps are back… I’ve spent today largely in the shade, hoping they will go away. They haven’t really, but there is still time. I also got some heavy duty ibuprofen… over the counter is 400 or 600 milligrams. How excited am I?!?
I’m having a great time, missing you all, not missing work… that about sums it up!
See you in a week (kind of, if you’re local in LA)! Is anyone having any oscar parties that I can crash?
Many more to go! I am excited and pleased to tell you all that I am now a “Peak Buoyancy” proficient. Or something like that. I did two dives today, and had to do some skills, some of which made me laugh, which caused problems with my mask. Damnit. All because of laughter! But, it was great dun, and I loved it.
Tomorrow evening I get on my first liveaboard, and I cannot wait. I am stoked. Tomorrow will be a day of relaxation at the beach, and then we go meet at the dive shop at 8pm. I was talking with a Divemaster Trainee, and OMG, I want to do it!!! Anyone want to start me on my quest with a donation?
Today I learned my computer, and had some of the guys at the shop teach me more – thank goodness. I was not good with the compass part – I couldn’t figure out how to get there, darnit!! But have no fear everyone, it works now. I saw two cuttlefish, some fabulous nudibranches, and fishes of many colors. It was rather silty, so I am stoked for when there is no silt!!! That’ll be in a few days.
I’ve taken a few photos, but not many, and I sent them via bberry messenger, and I got some lovely responses from people… so maybe you’ll get some before I go on my next liveaboard… Anyway, it’s lovely here. I’m going to go have a cider.
I wrote a whole blog post, and the computer at the internet kiosk I’m at shut down. So, here I go again!
I’m finally here, after a long delay in Narita. I was supposed to have gotten into BKK last night, at 1145pm, but instead, I’m here at 1pm today, Sunday. In Narita, the plane broke, and United (so not my favorite) borrowed a part and we got on our way. 14 hours later. United had to put an entire 747 up in hotels near the airport. So, I got my wish, which was to get a stamp in my passport from Japan. But, it’s a case of “be careful what you wish for,” as I was going to be sneaky and try to go out and back in, in my 2+ hour layover… didn’t happen. I met a nice Scot and his Thai wife, while we sat there waiting for United to tell us what the dealio was. It reminds me that when I fly to Thailand, I should really fly on China Airlines: better food and better, nicer service. It’s another case of also loving travel insurance. I’m now hopeful that they’ll pay for my flight I had to miss to fly to Phuket. Here’s to hopin’!
It was COLD in Tokyo and wow, I wasn’t prepared. Thank goodness for my sweatshirt, but dang, I was cold. There was ice on puddles as we left for the airport, so yeah, I was unprepared. I came expecting to get off the plane at midnight, in Thailand and that would have been great… Unfortunately, there was a different plan.
But, I made it to Bangkok and then I’ll make it further on to Phuket in an hour, well, I depart in an hour. More from Khao Lak!
I have only three more days of work, three more sleeps and I cannot wait! I am going diving again, this time with my mom, in Thailand. Like we were supposed to do last year. And didn’t. But, I’m heading to Thailand on Friday, and then South on Sunday, so that I can start the diving on Monday. I will try to update as often as possible, but facebook might end up being the place I do that. Or twitter… something.
Regardless, there will be pictures when I return! YAY!
My friend Erik (of The Global Trip fame) is looking for your stories. Go to World Swirl and send them in. You have till the end of 2008… you could be published – you know you wanna!!
